An anaplastologist is someone who specializes in designing prosthetics for people with malformed or missing body parts, such as ears, noses, legs, arms, fingers, or toes. They are the medical artists who mold the silicone and typically paint it to match skin tone and create symmetry.

There are multiple pathways to become an anaplastologist outlined by the Board for Certification in Clinical Anaplastology (BCCA) which is the only certifying body for clinical anaplastology in the world.

The International Anaplastology Association list multiple colleges with educational programs related to anaplastology, including Johns Hopkins University, UCLA, Columbia University, Gesellschaft fuer Chirurgische Prothetik und Epithetik, and more. They also list programs that offer continuing education related to anaplastology. There are also the closely related professions of ocularist, medical illustrator, and prosthetist. However for all of these fields, professionals must have experience in both art and medicine with clinical practice.
